EYFS Statement of Intent

As a Catholic school, the precepts of Catholic education are at the heart of all we do within the EYFS. Our curriculum is rooted in Gospel values and designed to be both challenging and engaging, ensuring that every subject is valued and celebrated. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that equips our children with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need for the next stage of their learning—and to grow into compassionate, responsible citizens in the wider world.

Understanding that our children arrive with varying levels of experience and language development, our Early Years provision focuses on fostering a love of learning and supporting each child to reach their full potential. We place a strong emphasis on developing communication and language skills to help close early gaps.

Early reading and phonics are key principles of our teaching. We nurture a love of books and stories while providing children with the essential building blocks for reading success. This strong foundation supports their confidence and enjoyment as lifelong learners.

In mathematics, children develop a deep understanding of number through practical experiences. We focus on key skills such as subitising, counting, recognising patterns and building numbers, enabling children to build firm number sense and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. We introduce the concept of Subitising. What is subitising?  At its simplest, subitising is being able to visually see a number of objects instantly without needing to count them out one at a time. We also value the vital role that parents and carers play in their child’s education. Through the use of Tapestry, we maintain strong communication links between home and school, celebrating achievements and sharing learning which is taking place at school and how parents can support their child at home. This partnership helps every child to flourish and thrive on their learning journey.
